Ontario Expanding Eligibility for Tariff Support Programs

L’Ontario élargit l’admissibilité aux programmes de soutien liés aux droits de douane

In the most recent U.S. escalation of trade actions against Canada, last night President Trump threatened new tariffs and bans on Canadian imports that target Ontario’s workers and businesses.

In response to these most recent actions, our government intends to expand eligibility for the Protect Ontario Financing Program (POFP) and the Ontario Together Trade Fund (OTTF) to help affected businesses adapt, diversify and stay competitive, while supporting workers should these trade escalations come into effect.

On September 8th, the U.S. government outlined a range of measures aimed at Canadian exports to the U.S., including additional 50 per cent tariffs that are set to take effect on September 15th and import bans on certain Canadian goods including alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles set to take effect on September 29th. Ontario’s expansion of eligibility will provide businesses with critical capital support so they can keep their doors open, keep workers on the job and reshore their supply chains

First launched in 2025, the $1 billion Protect Ontario Financing Program provides immediate relief for businesses impacted by tariffs and trade disruptions by providing loans that can be used for costs such as payroll, lease payments and utilities. The $150 million Ontario Together Trade Fund helps small and medium-sized enterprises affected by U.S. tariffs make near-term investments to reach new international and interprovincial markets, strengthen competitiveness and re-shore critical supply chains.

Ontario will continue doing whatever it takes to protect workers, businesses and communities from tariffs.
