MPP Michelle Cooper Calls for Specialized Hate Crime Prosecution Unit in Ontario
April 15, 2026
Hate-motivated violence is on the rise across Ontario, with deeply concerning impacts on communities targeted because of their religion, race, identity, or background.
In a Member’s Statement at Queen’s Park, I shared the story of a Jewish-owned restaurant that was targeted in a shooting—an incident that reflects a broader and troubling trend. These acts not only harm individuals and families, but also weaken the sense of safety and belonging that communities depend on.
To address this growing challenge, i am bringing forward a Private Member’s Motion calling for the establishment of a specialized hate crime prosecution unit. This proposed unit would provide dedicated expertise within the justice system, improve coordination with police, and ensure consistent, effective prosecution of hate-motivated offences.
At a time when hate crimes are increasing, targeted and coordinated action is essential. Strengthening Ontario’s response will help protect vulnerable communities and reinforce the province’s commitment to safety, inclusion, and justice for all.
The motion is expected to be debated at Queen’s Park this week.
